The Stroke Program at BAPTIST HEALTH Rehabilitation Institute (BHRI) is designed for individuals who have experienced a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) also known as a "brain attack" or stroke. The effects of a stroke may often limit one's ability to move (generally on one side of the body), impair speech & swallowing, cause confusion and memory disturbances, and cause a decrease in emotional control. Since the trauma of a strokecan cross the entire spectrum of medical, physical, cognitive, emotional and psychological problems, BHRI is staffed with specialized rehab professionals. These professionals who have specialized training in the treatment of individuals who have experienced a stroke and work together to meet the individual needs of each patient and their family.

The staff of BHRI utilize a team approach to rehabilitation. The goal of our program is to minimize the disability and help each patient achieve the highest possible level of independence. We also work closely with the patient's family to provide education and help them deal with the effects of the stroke. Both the patient and family are key members of the rehabilitation team and assist in goal setting and discharge planning. Staff and patient/family conferences assure a unified approach to the special concerns and problems related to a stroke.
The Stroke Program offers services from inpatient rehabilitation through outpatient therapy. The following are among the special programs which have been developed for the stroke patient and the patient's family:
Patients may be referred to BHRI by a physician, family member, friend or self-referral. A screening examination may be conducted prior to admission. The cost of treatment is covered as any hospitalization by Medicare, Medicaid, Workers' Compensation and private insurance carriers.
