Stroke Prevention & Risk Factors for Stroke
Arkansas ranks second in the nation for stroke. Education and good medical care can assist in reducing stroke risk factors. The most important treatable conditions linked to stroke are:
High Blood Pressure: Treat it! High Blood Pressure is by far the most potent risk factor for stroke! Eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight and exercise to reduce blood pressure. Drugs are also available to lower blood pressure. High blood pressure must be controlled!
Cigarette Smoking: Quit! Medical help is available to help quit and BAPTIST HEALTH offers a Smoking Cessation Program.
Heart Disease: Manage it! Your doctor can treat your heart disease and may prescribe medication to help prevent the formation of blood clots that can cause stroke. If you are over 50, talk to your doctor about aspirin therapy.
Diabetes: Control it! Treatment can delay complications that increase the risk of stroke. 20% of all people with stroke symptoms are diabetic.
Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA's): Seek help! TIA's are
small strokes that last only for a few minutes or hours. They should
never be ignored and can be treated with drugs or surgery.
